Certification Guidelines
  • The vanilla plantation must be established in existing second growth tropical rainforest or one in the initial stages of recovery. No deforestation or partial deforestation is permitted during the establishment of the plantation.
  • No exotic species should be introduced into the plantation for tutors or permanent shade. Additional tutors may be introduced into the plantation, but only using native species. Existing exotic species should not be cut down and farmers will not be penalized for having them.
  • A planting density of approximately 1.000 vanilla plants (tutors) per hectare is recommended to avoid over crowding and increased disease incidence.
  • Agrochemicals are discouraged but not prohibited due to the impossibility of controlling their use.
