Vanilla Export Company is producing and distributing
field ready plants for 500 Haitian families in the Northern
Region of Haiti. The efforts of starting a vanilla industry
in Haiti began in 2003 thanks to Anne and Rob
Reynolds, who have maintained a school in the Limbe
Watershed near Cap Haitien for almost a decade. The
desire to provide a different way of living to poor haitian
farmers brought them to our company. In 2004 Vanilla
Export Company planted the first in-vitro plantlets in
Haiti. In 2007, these plants flowered and produced
vanilla beans! At that time, it was clear that a Vanilla
Industry in Haiti was viable. Vanilla Export Company
brought together its expertise in project implementation
and Just before the 2010 Earthquake, DAI and USAID
set up a grant agreement to provide planting material
and technical assistance to beneficiaries of the DEED
project. The earthquake and political intervention in
Washington brought the project to a halt. With
continued efforts of DAI and Vanilla Export Company,
the project is finally under way. Vanilla Export Company
will continue to expand vanilla production in Haiti.
