Leading the way in reforestation and farming sustainability, VEC's efforts in oxygen
farming are the beginning of a drastic change in agricultural practices for the tropics.
Starting in the Limbe watershed of Northern Haiti, Vanilla Export Company has
teamed up with the Rainforest Vanilla Conservation Association to provide farmers
with cash in exchange for oxygen. For many years the environmental community has
tried carbon credits, carbon sequestration donations and other mechanisms that have
failed to reach the most needy of society: poor farmers and women heads of
households who do not have access to Carbon Agreements.
Over the past few years, we have come to learn that a handout always comes with
additional bagagge. In essence, a handout is not free. Most farmers who receive
something for free do not value it, as they sold their dignity in exchange. Our
comitment to Vanilla and Cocoa farmers in the Americas is to source funding for
oxygen produced in Cocoa-Vanilla projects in the Americas. If you would like to
